- 22 Days Before Saying Goodbye to Being 22 : CokskiBlue - Pinoy Vlogs, Videos and Vodcasts - [...] also heard me talk about a certain makeover. Sorry if the second part didn’t see the light of day. ...

Just the other day, one of my good buddies, Gibbs, have collated beautiful and heartwarming pieces of advice and messages from our very own friends – Jeff, Kring, Poyt, Fritz, Angel, AJ, Rick, Karla, Juned and McVie (thanks, guys!). It’s about Joe’s and my recent graduation last month, April 28 to be exact, from college at UP Diliman (which I have a very special vlog I’m preparing for) as engineers (OR scientists). It’s one of the nicest things a friend can do for me so I really appreciate the deed and I really had fun reading the messages.
But something hit me. An epiphany.
I have LOTS of major overhauling to do in my life.
While reading through the messages, I just realized that I’m not as “ready” as I thought in entering the real world. Yes, college did train me well in my chosen field (me hopes). But lemme say I’m not really the most practical guy in the world. I felt like I missed a pretty BIG checklist before I decided to start working. Now I’m worried – and here’s why:
1. Yes it was a start. But definitely not a fresh one.
Gibbs said:
See your first job as a fresh start. You didn’t do too well in school? Grades quite embarrassing? Never mind. The workplace is a great leveler, with everybody–honor graduate and borderline flunkie alike–having to start from scratch. You can, if you want to, outstrip those who have the early advantage of good grades by junking old habits and starting anew with vigor, enthusiasm, a will to learn and excel.
See, I have a problem. I have this NASTY and I mean nasty habit of starting off BAD. I got this from the usual “First Month Slack Attack” every time school starts. I usually rationalize that I could always make up for slacking around later in the semester. Surprise, surprise – I usually don’t. And now, I still have proven nothing at work.
2. Credit Card, I kinda need
Gibbs said:
Don’t get a credit card–yet. Resist the blandishments of credit-card companies, those-sweet tongued sirens who would say anything just to get you to sign up for their magic plastic.
See, I just created a PayPal account which needs a credit card number registered under my name. So I applied for a credit card. Uh-oh.
3. Am I doing what I love?
Kring said:
What’s important is that at the start of your career, you’ve done and learned as much as you can and make sure you get paid doing what you love.
I bet you guys didn’t know this: My first choice for an undergrad degree is BS Broadcast Communications, then Computer Science as the next. I have no idea how I didn’t get into the former but doing tv and movie-ish projects come so easy; it’s just like breathing to me. And you’ll get a hint of what I really love to do through this blog. Being a CS student came as a very big challenge.
4. I am ALWAYS LATE.
Poyt said:
Coy, brilliance can only take you so far. It also requires hardwork and getting things done on time. LOL.
Then Rick mentioned:
Avoid being late for at least six months.
If you have met me at least once, you’ll notice that I usually come with the latecomers. LOL. And close friends like Poyt KNOW I don’t arrive on time at meet-ups. I also tend to stretch deadlines to its far limits. This is TEH biggest problem that I need to change ASAP.
5 – 10 COMING UP!
You’re off to a good start, don’t worry. And just in case you haven’t read this before…

For you and all the fresh grads out there!
ps: I didn’t know Gibbs used my “advise”! LOL.
Thanks Sweet Pea… Lapit na birthday ah. (Here it goes…) PABURGER KA NAMAN DYAN!
APIR. I’m always, always, ALWAYS late. Kahit sang bagay, late ako (except maturity, I guess, LOL). But really, kapag meet-ups or group meetings or kahit simpleng okasyon lang, late ako.
Anyway, there’s still room for improvement.
Yakang-yaka yan!
I’m trying to minimize my usual “grace period” minute by minute. Hehe. Thanks Kevin.
Oh good lord, Coy, you don’t need to go through each and every thing we wrote and nitpick on yourself, hahaha! No one starts off with a 10-out-of-10 score. Many even start off on the wrong foot.
That’s why the first thing I said after “moisturize” is “make lots of mistakes”. Never be too afraid to make mistakes (just don’t make mistakes deliberately–that’s self-sabotage). That’s part of discovering what you are capable of in the workplace. =)
And moisturize. (But not in your workplace, or else people will think you’re more than a metrosexual, LOL! [Not that there's anything wrong with that!])
hmmm. Just be cool, zen and shi huang ti … and shoot buddha when you meet him
Haha. I WAS Buddha. When I was 5.
Congratulations and welcome to the first day of the rest of your life! I believe you’ll do well so don’t sweat it out too much. Have fun!
Why thanks, Fitz!
can’t wait for part 2!
I can’t wait either. Sana matapos ko before you leave.
That is what I’m trying to change…. being late. And lately (hahaha :p), mas napapaaga ako. After receiving my first salary, I rewarded myself… no, not a new watch.
Better late than later. Work on this one first, IMO. I’m not the most credible person to give you tips pero sa mga naranasan ko before, kung hindi ka nale-late, mas focused ka for the rest of the day, and you’ll work more efficiently. For one, you don’t have to worry thinking of a valid reason of your tardiness. And two, you won’t be conscious about people seeing you undisciplined and irresponsible, regardless of whether you like your job or not.
Hope this helps.
I’d love to say more but McVie, seasoned as he is, said what I meant to. Also, like Gibbs here, I want 5-10 LOL. And for the undergrads, those yet to graduate, Squid has this to say
Thanks for all the wisdom you’ve imparted through our talks, man. Really appreciate it.
Don’t worry, I missed a pretty BIG checklist too before I decided to start working. And I doubt kung meron man talagang nag-effort at mag-eeffor na magprepare ng kanyang checklist. haha! sasambahin ko yung tao na yun. Anyway, goodluck dood!
Haha. Yuz I actually realized that lately. Nobody can really “prepare”. Thanks Angel!
Natawa naman ako sa pamumuna ko sa pagiging tardy mo.
Humabol ka ha! Lagi rin akong late dati eh. Hanggang ngayon rin, pero sa gimmicks na lang! Good luck, Coy!
Haha! Kilalang kilala mo na ako badet. Sana mabawasan ang tardiness ko – mga 30 minutes late na lang sana LOL.
