“Dapat pala anak, nag-Lactum ka.”
“Hala. Abnormal ka pala.”
“Buti nagmana ka sa akin.”
“Insecure na papa mo sa’yo.”

These are few of the many funny things my family blurted out when we learned yesterday that I passed the Mensa Qualifying Exam. They were actually more shocked than I was when I read this letter in front of them:

Mensa is the largest, oldest, and best known high-IQ society in the world. It is a non-profit organization open to people who score at the 98th percentile or higher on a standardized, supervised intelligence test.

It was awesome meeting Mensa Philippines President, Chris Tan last November 15 at the Ideal Minds Office. He briefed us on what Mensa is all about and gave us a bit of its background. He also told us that Mensans do not really fit a certain stereotype. No, they are not all geeks like most people might think – they represent people from all walks of life and there are members from different age groups (I read the youngest member is only 2 years old!).So I did a bit of googling and I found a rather funny comment on people with “above-average” IQ:

Most people’s IQ falls between 100 and 120. Anything above 120 is considered above average. Anything above 150 is considered genius. So you are gifted. Consider it a curse: you have to live in a world where 95% of people are stupider than you are. You probably find useless chatter boring and as a consequence find it tough to make small talk. However, 95% of people find that small talk stimulating. Yah, life sucks.

Oh yah, if you need anyone to chat with feel free to message me on this thing. It gets pretty lonely.

So if I summarize the stereotypes I’ve been hearing then I’m the total opposite:

  • I enjoy useless chatter and small talks.
  • I hate am not fond of arguing or debating. (Or maybe I just rather listen than participate)
  • I don’t read books anything.
  • Just read my blog. You’ll know. :P

But then one thing’s more important than getting into Mensa and it’s rediscovering yourself – knowing your potential and what you’re capable of. This challenge can give you that. The exam is culture-fair and does not test Math and Language skills so everyone is fair game. You never know, you might be in for a good surprise.

So take time and be part of the testing marathon this Sunday, November 30. You can PRE-REGISTER HERE ON OR BEFORE NOVEMBER 28. Here are the details:

we mensans have high iq’s. but some of us have low emotional quotients or eq. the important thing is not to be a super genius (being in the upper 2% of the population in intelligence is very good already) but to be well-rounded, mentally, emotionally, physically and ABOVE all spiritually.

    • Thanks for dropping by Joe.

I would like to believe that I have average-EQ, according to my friends at least. :)

But you’re right. I think EQ is also (if not more) important. About being well-rounded – personally, I’m not there yet especially “physically” hehe. It’s a matter of knowing and identifying which habits to ditch. And I got tons of bad ones that I’m trying very hard to control. Hard work. :(

  8. wooot! Congrats coy! :)

  9. Napagusapan ka agad sa yahoogroups ah hehe. Ako? I’m too cute to be a geek.. JOWKJOWKJOWK. :P Welcome to Mensa. :)
